A Wonderful Man

I first met Mike when he started working as a driving instructor for Learndrive Ltd. On his first morning, he walked through the hotel dining room, a great, big smile on his face as he greeted all the pupils - as he did every day - with a 120 dB good morning. Then it was the instructors turn, but we had the additional benefit of a very firm handshake. His enthusiasm and good nature was infectious. I instantly liked Mike. Mike did not suffer fools and during his time at Learndrive, Mike encountered a few. The most memorable pupil that Mike had was a man from London who came on a two-day course. Mike soon realised that this man had never driven before and was, obviously, on the wrong course. Twenty minutes into the course, and being very diplomatic, he told him he would not be taking his driving test the next day. It's a record that I can see never been broken. Mike was a very generous man. He invited all the driving instructors for a meal to celebrate his wedding to Diane. It was a great night, hosted by a wonderful couple. But Mike's generosity was not always reciprocated. One hot summer day Mike stopped to buy himself and the girl he was teaching an ice cream. A letter from the girl arrived following her course to complain that her instructor had stopped to buy an ice cream. Mike had a good laugh at that. Mike was a really great man who was well liked by everyone. He will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Mike, you old bugger. Paul.
